Growing a Healthier Generation and Cleaner Planet with Uncle Matt’s
Our mission at Uncle Matt’s Organic is to a grow a healthy generation. While we primarily do this through how we produce our delicious, organic, better-for-you beverages, fostering a healthy lifestyle and planet goes beyond just juice. Wherever we can, we look for ways outside of organic farming practices to improve our home for everyone. From BPA free bottles to carbon neutral shipping options to sustainable merchandise, we put the health of our environment at the forefront of our initiatives.
While we take this approach from a company standpoint, we know that it takes commitments from as many as possible to make a true impact. Here are some ways you can take steps to protect our Earth:
Recycle! Our 12oz and 52oz bottles are BPA Free and PET #1. This is the most recyclable form of plastic and the safest for food and juices. What’s your part? You can help keep these bottles out of landfills by placing empties in your recycling bin. Our 2oz juice shots are made from rPET plastic meaning that they are made out of already recycled material! You can keep the cycle going by recycling these small bottles, too. We’ve also partnered with TetraPak® to package our juice boxes. These are also — you guessed it — recyclable!
Aside from just our juice bottles, take this approach to everything. If it’s made from recyclable material, make sure you place the empty container in the right bin. Clothes and other household goods can also be recycled! Consider donating and consigning furniture, storage boxes and clothing so these items don’t end up in a junkyard or the ocean.
Compost and garden organically. We use organic compost in our citrus groves to naturally nourish our fruit trees without the use of toxic chemical pesticides. We also use organic-approved botanical sprays to manage pests and weeds. If you have a backyard garden, you can follow our lead and keep glyphosate and other toxic pesticides out of the soil and off your homegrown fruits and veggies. Opt for Black Kow organic compost or make your own instead of using chemical fertilizers. You can also plant marigolds to deter pests and pull pesky weeds by hand.
These methods promote health for you, your family and the environment. By utilizing organic compost, you’re keeping toxic chemicals out of the soil. These chemicals deplete the soil of nutrients for sort term gains. They can also seep into the water supply since they can live in the soil for years. Using organic or homemade compost also means you’re in control of what feeds your garden and eventually makes its way into your body.
Use alternative transportation. One of the perks of working for the Uncle Matt’s team is work-from-home flexibility. We’re making a small impact on car emissions by offering our employees a hybrid working option. If your work allows this, we encourage you to work from home when possible. If not, try carpooling to work with a coworker if that fits your schedule.
Biking and walking are other alternatives to keeping cars off the road and the air we breathe a little cleaner. If you live in area where you can easily get to your common destinations on a quick bike ride or walk, we suggest doing the planet a favor and taking advantage of these options.
Conserve power. Let’s be honest, no one likes an expensive power bill. As Floridians, we’re used to these hefty monthly costs as a results of running our A/C during the sweltering summer months. Together, we can impact our electrical grid. By cutting back on power usage, we can cut our power costs while also helping slow global warming.
You can cut back on extra power usage by unplugging items and turning off electronics in rooms that you’re not using. TVs, ceiling fans, bathroom lights, etc. are all fair game. Make sure you also turn all of these things off when they aren’t in use for extended periods of time, such as overnight or while you’re out of town.
Feeling warm on solar power? Us too. Solar powered outdoor lights don’t require any electricity. Solar panels on your roof can also power your house while using only a fraction of the fossil fuels you were previously using.
Avoid single use items. Choosing non single use items can be a chore when so much of what we shop for is designed for convenience rather than sustainability. While this might make your shopping list look a little different, small changes now can make a difference for your wallet and the environment in the future.
Here are a couple ideas you can start implementing now:
- Ditch paper towels and paper napkins. Washable hand towels and cloth napkins can be used over and over without filling your trash can.
- Stop buying paper plates and plasticware. Use your everyday plates and silverware. If you’re hosting an event and need extra serving dishes, opt for biodegradable versions instead of paper and plastic.
- Use refillable soap dispensers. Instead of buying a new soap bottle every time you run out, you can reduce plastic waste by purchasing one large soap container and using it to refill your smaller containers throughout your house.
- Say no to plastic water bottles. Buy a reusable water bottle in your favorite color and refill it as many times as you like. You’ll feel good about making sure you’re hitting your daily water intake goals while also not overly contributing to your trash bin.
