Uncle Matt’s Gives Back: Matthew’s Hope Ministries
Matthew’s Hope is a non-profit, independent ministry committed to supporting the needs of the homeless population in parts of Central Florida. Fully funded by donations from the local community, this organization does more than just offer shelter and a food pantry to those in need.
Inspired by the book of Matthew (25:25-40), the goal of Matthew’s Hope is to provide a wide range of resources for the homeless to help them prosper beyond their current circumstances. Their offerings include hygienic services like laundry and haircuts, transportation to and from medical appointments, transitional housing for those enrolled in their Moving Forward Program and spiritual and educational support. Matthew’s Hope is on a mission to foster growth so that those who have found themselves in undesirable and unfortunate living and employment situations can lead a successful future.
Uncle Matt’s is proud to support Matthew’s Hope in their efforts to help the homeless in Central Florida. Here’s an interview with Matthew’s Hope’s Director talking more about how their organization impacts our local community. Read on.
When was Matthew’s Hope started and why?
Matthew’s Hope was established 14 years ago by founder Scott, who has firsthand experience of homelessness. Matthew’s Hope had a mission to be a hand up organization versus a hand out type organization.
What kind of impact will this donation from Uncle Matt’s Organic make on this program?
This generous donation will have a tremendous impact on our organization. It will help provide food for our pantry, enable us to go out into the community and pick up homeless individuals, and allow us to better serve our communities.
How many people does Matthew’s Hope serve annually?
Annually, our organization serves around 7,200 people.
Which counties do you serve in Florida?
Matthew’s Hope serves the people of Orange and Brevard County.
From your perspective, what is one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the homeless crisis in America?
I believe the biggest misconception about homelessness is that it is only limited to people who suffer from addiction and live under bridges. In reality, it can impact individuals from all levels of society, including the educated and uneducated, mothers and fathers, addicts, and non-addicts alike. HUD reports that in 2023, 653,100 people in the U.S. experienced homelessness.
What is the most meaningful success or “thank you” story you have been a part of through this ministry?
My personal journey with Matthews Hope. As someone who has faced homelessness firsthand, Matthews Hope has been a lifeline for me, providing transitional housing, helping me rebuild relationships with my children and family, securing a home and car, and propelling me to the position of Director within the organization. My success story, from homelessness to leadership, is a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and community support.
How does the local community support you and what else can be done to help?
The local community generously supports us by donating essential items such as food, clothing, and goods, as well as providing financial contributions like Uncle Matt’s Organic. If monetary donations are not feasible, individuals can still show their support by spreading the word about Matthews Hope on social media, helping to raise awareness and visibility online.
Where do you wish to see Matthew’s Hope in the next 10 years?
I have a two-fold vision for the future. Firstly, within the next decade, I envision Matthew’s Hope expanding its reach to serve not only other counties in Central Florida, but also beyond. Secondly, I am optimistic that as a community, we can come together to provide stronger support for the homeless population, leading to a decrease in the number of individuals living on the streets.
