In: Organic
This is the gold standard of food labels! This seal ensures that the food item is held to nationally recognized policies for organic standards set by the National Organic Program in coordination with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. By choosing organic, you’re ditching GMOs, antibiotics, growth hormones, artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives and more from your diet!
Out: Artificial Flavors & Ingredients
Remember what we said about the organic certification? If you see the organic seal, you can rest assured there’s nothing artificial about what you’re consuming. Don’t see the organic seal? Take a closer look at the ingredient list. If the organic seal isn’t present, you could be consuming chemical additives, artificial sweeteners, dyes and GMOs.
In: Glyphosate Residue Free
Glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp, is prohibited for use in organic agriculture and has been labeled as a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization. To be certified organic, the soil must not be treated with any prohibitive substances, such as glyphosate, for at least three years. The Detox Project tests for any residual glyphosate that might be present in the soil from before the switch to fully organic farming. When you see the Glyphosate Residue Free designation this means there is no residual glyphosate detected!
Out: Toxic Pesticides
The only way to be sure no toxic chemicals were used to grow your food is to look for the organic seal. But what about non-GMO? Non-GMO verification means the food was not produced through genetic engineering or has not been produced from genetically modified ingredients. This is a great step towards your overall wellness, but this doesn’t guarantee organic farming best practices were met, and certainly doesn’t mean you’re not consuming toxic pesticides like glyphosate.
In: No Added Sugar
Looking to lower your sugar intake? Opt for no sugar added versions of some of your favorite sweetened items. Start with Uncle Matt’s No Sugar Added Lemonade and Strawberry Lemonade. Sweetened with organic Reb M stevia instead of cane sugar, these products are a great step towards reducing your sugar intake, and they taste great, too!
Out: Added Sugar
It’s no secret that overconsumption of sugar is a problem in the U.S. Extra sugar can be hard to avoid, especially when buying pre-packaged goods. Our advice: Check the packaging again! Pay close attention to the nutrition facts panel and how many grams of added sugars the food contains. You might not be able to eliminate added sugar completely, but you can opt for low sugar varieties of some of your favorite snacks. You can also choose whole fruits and veggies which only contain natural sugar from Mother Nature.
In: Recycling
Our 12oz and 52oz bottles are BPA Free and PET #1. This is the most recyclable form of plastic and the safest for food and juices. Help keep these bottles out of landfills by placing empties in your recycling bin. Our 2oz juice shots are made from rPET plastic meaning that they are made out of already recycled material! You can keep the cycle going by recycling these small bottles, too. Pro tip: Take this approach to everything. If it’s made from recyclable material, make sure you place the empty container in the right bin.
Out: Flavor Packets
Some orange juice brands work with flavor and fragrance companies to artificially flavor their juice. Made from orange essence and oils, flavor packets are added into juice to create a standard, consistent taste. Flavor packets are technically derived from citrus by-products but could also be chemically altered. The FDA doesn’t disclosed on packaging.
