What’s in a Name? The Uncle Matt’s Naming Story
Well, lots actually. Every company goes through this – the naming process. And every company’s story is a little different. So where did the name “Uncle Matt’s Organic” come from? We sat down with Uncle Matt himself to find out.
Q: Give us the back story, was your plan always for the company to be called “Uncle Matt’s Organic?”
A: Looking back, I had all these silly, cheesy names picked out, but I could tell I hadn’t landed on the right one yet.
Q. Can you tell us some of those names?
A. No, they really weren’t in the running, but I can tell you I didn’t intend for the company to be named after me. I wasn’t trying to be the “Ronald McDonald” of the organic juice industry.
Q. Well with a last name like ‘Mc-Lean’ you wouldn’t have been far from that! Just kidding. Anyways, so where did the name come from?
A. My sister-in-law came up with it, actually. She called me one morning and told me it came to her in a dream.
Q. Wait, for real? She just dreamed up the name of your company? And then you used it?
A. Yes, she did. And at first, I wasn’t so sure, but then I figured her dreaming this had to come from somewhere, and I wasn’t going to mess with that.
Q. Wow, so the name came from a dream!
A. And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. A family-owned and operated company wanting to protect and grow healthier future generations. ‘Uncle’ was a perfect fit for me, the family and our company… and it’s what we still stand for today.
And there you have it! A dream back in 1999 has grown into the #1 organic orange juice selling company in the U.S. with no plans of slowing down any time soon.
