How Glyphosate impacts childrens’ health in the US
A new study published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that childhood exposure to glyphosate, a common pesticide, is linked to metabolic and liver disorders in adulthood. Researchers analyzed data from mother-child pairs in California over 18 years, tracking exposure to glyphosate through diet and proximity to pesticide application.
The study found that children with high levels of glyphosate and its breakdown product AMPA in their urine had higher concentrations of glucose and fat molecules, larger waistlines, and higher blood pressure as adults. In addition, those with high levels of glyphosate at age 5 were more likely to experience elevated liver enzyme levels later in life.
The study also linked airborne exposure to glyphosate application to an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Adults who were raised near areas with high glyphosate use or whose mothers were pregnant in these areas were more likely to have markers of metabolic syndrome.
The researchers suggest that consumers can reduce their risk of metabolic and liver disorders by regulating their diet and lifestyle and choosing organic products. Organic products are grown without toxic pesticides like glyphosate, which has been linked to these health problems.
