Uncle Matt’s Organic follows practices of great-grandfather to revive family citrus business
Abstract:
A series of killer freezes in the 1980s ruined the Lake County citrus business of Matt McLean’s family, but he revived it by following the practices his great-grandfather used more than a century ago.
Long before these practices had a name, Angus Benjamin McLean grew citrus in nearby Polk County without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
Those practices, now known as organic, are the cornerstone of Uncle Matt’s Organic, a Clermont-based company that produces fresh organic orange juice and fresh fruit.
What began as an operation he started with his mother, Susan, in 1999 has evolved into a company with 15 employees and about 1,000 acres of groves in Polk and Lake counties.
